Title: R&D Engineer (Fluid Dynamics)
Reports to: VP of Engineering, dotted line to Director Adv. Eng.
Position Objective:
Responsible for research and ideation of new concepts and products. Primary focus on development of airless, air assisted spray systems. Must have a high level understanding of fluid dynamics concepts (computational and experimental). Guide designers, technicians with product development to meet project objectives. Goal is to continuously improve how our painting systems transport and atomize coatings for improved coverage and reduce overspray.

Basic investigations in the field of atomization of paint for handheld devices based on CFD simulations and tests to validate these simulations. Employ Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and fluid flow image diagnostic techniques for analysis and testing of various Wagner products. Support of series development with CFD simulations of fluid flows
CFD Software: Either Star CCM+/ ANSYS Fluent, Converge CFD, OpenFOAM
Image Diagnostics: PIV, Laser Diffraction, Shadow graphy, Mie Scattering, Laser Induced Fluorescence, LaVISION Spray Master system (Spray geometry patternation, droplet quantification)
Design Software: PTC Creo

Perform engineering analytical activities through programming, in Engineering department and externally as needed. Conduct image processing analysis as required.

Relationship to Others:
- Takes direction from Engineering Leaders and works with other Engineers, Designers and Technicians on specific design targets.
- Has input responsibility for the design functions related to spray performance, fluid mixing, heat transfer design, material stresses, fits, and related part functions.
Dimensions of Position:
- Works with confidential information including company financials and cost data.
- Works with suppliers and consultants on design related functions.
- Works with global R&D and provide analysis input as required.
Education
Master’s degree (Aerospace/ Mechanical/ Chemical Engineering/ Physics/ Mathematics) with specialization in fluid dynamics (CFD and experimental). PhD preferred.
Experience
3+ years of experience in an R&D role employing fluid dynamic concepts, engineering analysis & experimentation. Experience with application based CFD and product design (either academia or industry) Experience with conducting PIV, LDV experiments in a research environment.
Skills
- Advanced experience in the field of fluid dynamics CFD, ideally in simulation of atomization process of liquid media
- Advanced skills in employing laser based image diagnostics, PIV, LDV, spray patternation, droplet quantification etc.
- CAD Design Software: PTC Creo
- Skills in engineering programming including but not limited to MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW etc.
- Ability to produce and test prototype proof of concept prototypes
- Distinct hands-on mentality
- Project, and Microsoft Visual Basic, and Programming in C & C+.
- Ability to communicate well and formally deliver presentations and information’s to superiors or other engineering groups.
- Basic user knowledge in CAD system (ideally Creo)
- A high degree of personal responsibility and initiative
- Willingness to work as part of an international team
