Title:  Test Technologist


Reports to: Engineering Manager



                                    Position Objective: To provide technical support to the new product development process through testing and evaluation.

To gather and record accurate test data.

To provide timely evaluations and summaries of test results.

To conduct tests to applicable standards in accordance with ETL/Intertek Level 3 Satellite Program.

 Works directly with requesters to develop test plans, cost estimates, schedules and conduct any standard or specialized tests for a major development program. Plans, sets up, and conducts advanced tests in a technical specialty using advanced equipment and techniques. Performs duties of test technician as required.



  • Responsible for communication all test concerns to Test Engineer or Project Leader. Writes accurate and concise test summaries, including analysis of data. Provides data analysis and interpretation. Responsible for statistical analysis of test results, including Weibull analysis of endurance test data. Responsible for communication all test concerns to Test Engineer or Project Leader using periodic test plan status reports.



  • Sets up, operates, and maintains all test equipment. Performs calibration verification on commonly used measuring devices



  • Designs and builds test fixtures, including coordination of part fabrication and programming of PLC’s. Is the recognized expert on a specialized piece of test equipment or test procedure and provides training and assistance to others in this area.



  • Recommends and develops new test concepts and procedures, may involve the design or purchase of custom test equipment and writes standards for these procedures. Develops new test standards. Develops accelerated system and component endurance tests. Responsible for developing and expanding test technology in a specialized test discipline.



  • Operates all test-related computer programs and is able to use a personal computer for data analysis, documentation, and reporting.



  • Instructs Test Technicians in testing fundamentals. Maintains good housekeeping practices.



  • Performs other duties and assumes accountabilities as apparent or as delegated.




Relationship to Others:

  • Provides management with recommendations on improvements in test methods and equipment.
  • Works closely with other Test Engineers, Designers, and Quality Assurance to receive instruction regarding test methods and priorities.
  • Provides direction to Test Technicians on assigned tasks.   
  • Prepare test plans and status reports for new product development teams.
  • Prepares accurate, test reports based on data collected in accordance with Wagner internal reporting standards.
  • Trains others in specialized testing equipment and methods.



Dimensions of Position:

  • Responsible for learning new and existing Wagner products and processes as required for specific job assignments.
  • Responsible for advancing test groups capabilities through the creation of new test standards, developing accelerated system and component endurance tests and recommending the purchase of instruments, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Works with confidential information including test results, product costs, etc.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



2 years of vocational or engineering school



8 years experience testing, repairing, or inspecting hydraulic or mechanical machines or devices.  Must have experience using electronic measuring probes, power hand tools, signal generators, stripping tool, voltage meters, and fluid /thermal measuring instruments



  • Basic skill level in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Visual Basic
  • Ability to use analytical or scientific software such as Lab View and MatLab.
  • Understanding of 3D modeling software (Creo) and 3D printers.
  • Good reading comprehension, writing skills, planning and organizing skills
  • Good mechanical aptitude and general understanding of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to work independently, making optimum us of time and equipment
  • Understanding of alternating current and wiring techniques including DC circuits, single-phase and 3-phase power.
  • Understanding of transformer and generator configurations including wye and delta connections as well as AC and DC contactors and relays.
  • Ability to read and understand schematic diagrams and component data sheets.
  • Understanding of pressure transducers and thermal sensors.
